Why Living in Residence was One of the Best Decision I’ve Ever Made

Heading into university I was a bit nervous. I wondered, “What if I don’t make friends? How will I meet people? Am I ready to live on my own?” It is a massive new chapter in your life, and an exciting time where you get to discover so much about yourself and your interests. I’m from Moncton, NB Canada which is about a 30-minute drive outside of Sackville. I would’ve been able to commute to campus, however I made the decision to live in residence, and it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

I vividly remember my first time driving up to the front doors of my residence on move-in day with a whirlwind of excitement and anxiety for what was to come. I was instantly greeted by a plethora of residence and orientation leaders who greeted me with so much kindness. They even unloaded my car and brought everything to my room for me. Who knew I would be getting room service! It was incredible how the leadership team went out of their way to get to know each of the incoming students, listening to their stories and their passions. They inspired me to continue creating a safe, inclusive environment for all, and led me to becoming a residence leader as the Vice President of Campbell Hall in my second year.

Even after the initial orientation period there were so many friendly faces in the hallways who consistently gave a smile in passing and checked in on how we were doing. There is such a strong community within residence at MtA, and it is such an incredible thing living a few doors down from your new best friends, and having a strong support system of Residence Assistants (RAs), Academic Mentors (AcMen), House Executives (Exec), the Assistant Don (AD), and the residence Don, all looking out for you.

I also stress the importance of getting involved! There is so much to do and be a part of in residence at MtA. A majority of your residence fees go back to you and the house for exciting events, free merch, and other events and initiatives that better the house. The main reason for attending university is to receive your degree, but between the books, it is important to get involved within the tight knit community at MtA. This could be through signing up for a house representative position, a residence leadership role, or just joining in to eat some pizza and watch a movie in the lounge. There is truly something for everyone. If the roles in res are not of interest the university has a TON of clubs and societies, the Mount Allison Student’s Union (MASU) to get involved with, and many student jobs and volunteer opportunities.

If you are on the fence about staying in res, I highly suggest taking the leap of faith and signing up to become a member of a community and support system like no other. I believe it is truly the best way to meet so many incredible people, all in the same boat as you, trying to figure out their interests and passions. I met my closest friends in res, and they are ones who will be friends for life. I have so many fond memories looking back at my almost two years in residence, and I’m certain you will too.
