Attending university in the midst of a pandemic is definitely not what anyone expected when preparing for this part of their life, I know I definitely did not. I am sure that everyone has experienced some form of restricted or adjusted schooling due to this pandemic, and it can feel very inconvenient or unmotivating. I understand there are also many students who perhaps have thrived in the adjustments that came in response to the pandemic, those who prefer to sit at home or in a comfortable space in front of their laptops instead of at a desk in a classroom surrounded by others. Those who prefer to have posts from their teachers and professors, who teach them through more unstructured and unscheduled instead of a more structured and in-person formats. There may also be students who work best with a mix of the two, and I, Jada Rawlins, a third-year student here at Mount Allison, am one of those people. Here at Mount Allison we have experienced education in all three versions for quite some time now, bringing to our attention that we cannot predict our university experience and, although hopefully we return to some form of normalcy soon, there is a possibility that anything can happen that can affect the style of education we receive.
Despite our differences in what we may prefer as students and how we receive our form of education, we can all agree that being stuck within one, usually small and enclosed place can be tiring, frustrating, and have effects on our attention span and work quality. Especially when living in university residence and being mostly limited to the entirety of your dorm room as a classroom 24/7, or you do not have transportation that can allow you to leave the town to explore and work in other environments therefore you feel restricted to one’s living space, can be extremely difficult and disheartening. Therefore, this post is to provide a list of places in Sackville that are great changes of environment and can better suit your needs as study/ work spaces and classrooms for when you need a break from your own room, residence, or home when in Sackville. There will also be descriptions of each location provided with their attributes that create a nice and fresh work environment. This information can still be useful to simply complete assignments when we are no longer subject to the education restrictions and constant adjustments caused by this pandemic! All locations mentioned below are of reasonable walking distance therefore accessible no matter the weather, unless closed due to severe weather. All establishments stated also welcome students to do work regardless of making a purchase, just showing how much this town supports the students at Mount Allison University!
- Gracie’s Lounge/The Pond: These first locations may seem like an obvious one as they are a commonly used Mount Allison student study space. However, as an incoming student you may not be aware of these comfortable locations just yet. Both spaces are located on the ground floor of the Wallace McClain Student Centre on the university campus and are paired together due to their close proximity to one another, practically being connected. These spaces are slightly chatty yet still not loud and distracting environments, good for students who work best with some noise and life occurring around them. The seating ranges from booths to comfy couches and tables, to normal desk chairs and tables to suit the ergonomic needs of each individual. This location is one of the most likely to be left available to students throughout the different phases and level changes of the pandemic, continuously allowing us a break from our rooms. A bonus to these spaces is not only food allowed and a microwave available, but one of the university’s cafés is attached and usually open throughout the week for grill items (i.e. BLT’s, burgers, fries, chicken tenders, etc.) as well as convenience items, cold, and hot drinks all for reasonable prices.
- Cranewood Bakery: This next location is approximately a 5-minute walk from the university campus located on 113 Main Street. This bakery not only bakes and serves the most delicious pastries, bread loaves, soups, sandwiches, and both hot and cold beverages (i.e., coffee, latte’s, lemonades, etc.) they also have many very aesthetic and comfortable seating areas suitable for one’s studies. Free wireless internet is available at this location therefore any electronic devices needed can be used and they are open from 8:30am to 4pm 6 days a week, 10am to 4pm on Sundays. This bakery within the historic Cranewood House also specializes in accommodating for dietary restrictions making their delicious baked goods and beverages available to all. One of my roommates struggles with both corn and gluten allergies making it very difficult to find food from anywhere that she can eat, as corn ranges from corn starch to syrup to many other names and is often a substitute for gluten. Cranewood is one of her favourite spots to spend all day working, eating, and getting a nice, Victorian change of scenery.
- Aida’s Café: Aida’s, located at 8 Bridge Street, is a modern style café also approximately a 5-minute walk from campus. This café often meets more traffic of customers throughout the day and therefore often has a slightly louder and more active atmosphere. Therefore, it is a great spot for students who are from the city or prefer noise over silence when doing their studies. However, Aida’s is not always the louder city-like café, often having times throughout the day and week that are relatively empty and quiet, making it a suitable location for multiple types of students. Aida’s serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner opening from 8am to 7pm throughout Tuesday to Saturday, serving pastries, a large variety of hot and cold drinks, macaroons, sandwiches/wraps and Asian cuisine. Similar to Cranewood bakery free Wi-Fi is available within this establishment allowing the use of electronics if needed. If you need an escape from your room and would like to experience school life in a city café-like environment then Sackville has got a place for you.
- Black Duck Café: Located on 19 Bridge Street, approximately a 7-minute walk from campus, is another modern however rural maritime instead of city styled café. This cute, rustic, cozy, and aesthetically pleasing café is a quieter environment compared to the other two, less constant traffic for to-go lattés and more customers sitting inside for hours cozied up and reading. Various different kinds of delicious and heartwarming meals and pastries are served here as well as hot and cold beverages. There is a front seating area as well as a cozy and extremely warm back seating area perfect for chilly days due to the large windows overlooking their personal garden, allowing the sun to warm it right up. This location does not provide internet; therefore, it is the perfect location to get all of one’s readings and studying done in a cozy, peaceful environment outside of your dorm room/apartment. Even if you don’t have any work you wish to do here you should definitely come out to try their amazing fresh local food made with garden and farmers’ market ingredients, especially their delicious mussel fries or numerous grilled cheeses!
- Jennings Dining Hall: This may be an unexpected location for some or not, but for incoming students who are unaware of what this is, Jennings is the main university dining hall. It is located on the North Side of campus next to Windsor, Campbell, and Harper Hall, the larger residences on campus. The dining hall is available to university students only, between the hours of 8am to 8pm serving breakfast, lunch, dinner, and continuous meals throughout the day. Not many students think of this originally, but this is a great work and study location, especially since once you are in you are not required to leave until the entirety of the facility closes. It is a great spot to sit all day and have food consistently available to you without any extra expense then the meal plan paid for within the residence fees. This is also a great spot to talk with other students around, possibly meet new people, and hang out with your friends comfortably within a warm and cozy school environment outside of the residences or classrooms.
I hope this post helped you find some new ideas on where to socialize, study, or simply get a break from the common view that is your dorm rooms/homes, I know every single one of these locations helped me thrive in my studies!
