Sackville's Charm

Although Sackville is such a small place, many students, including myself, do not explore and experience all that Sackville has to offer. There are obviously the Sackville staples such as the Library, Ducky’s Bar, Swan Pond, and many others that everyone knows of. Over my two years at Mount A, I have discovered that it is important to appreciate all of Sackville and its charm.

Speaking on behalf of many MtA students, it is easy to get lost in the routine of going to class, extracurriculars, going to meal hall (or attempting to cook for off campus students), studying, and socializing on the weekends (or weekdays). Now more than ever, it is important to support local businesses in Sackville. Take a morning off, go to Cranewood for coffee and a treat, go to the market, take a break from cooking/meal hall and grab sushi with friends at Downtown Diner (recently renamed Nabi Sushi!), or browse the shelves at Tidewater Books or Dave's Rock Emporium. Small businesses are an integral part of what makes Sackville so special and gives it its charm.

During my first two years at Mount A, I have seen the same sights. Don’t get me wrong, walking to class on a crisp fall morning, watching the snow fall from your res room, and admiring the sights of Waterfowl Park never really get old. Yet, living in Sackville this summer, I’ve explored the outskirts and neighborhoods of Sackville, and I cannot get enough. My favourite sights include the old Train Station, the Broken Bridge, the NB Trail past TRHS, Silver Lake, and all the cute farms that are just a stone’s throw away. Since Sackville has been relatively free from urbanization, the buildings, houses, and side streets have a feeling of nostalgia that is undeniably magical. Being from Moncton, home is not too far away, but every chance I get, I come to Sackville. It is an indescribable feeling driving up over the hill and seeing the exit to Sackville. It just may be the coziest, most heartwarming place on earth.

In the grand scheme of things, our time in this wonderful place is quite short. The years go by fast, so slow down, take it all in. My friends and I joke that we’re all living in the Sackville sitcom, so put your favorite tunes on, take a walk around and be the main character in your very own coming of age movie. Sackville is my home away from home and I cannot wait for it to become yours.
