The Perks of Residence Life

If you ask anybody at Mount A, they would tell you that residence was my peak in life. Staying in residence for a second year and becoming the Academic Mentor of Thornton House was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Most of my best experiences and lifelong friends from Mount A are connected to my time in Thornton House. So, with this blog post I want to touch on 5 points of why residence life is so great:

  1. Late Night – Nothing beats when you’re studying hard late at night and you’re hungry and in need of a break... and then 10 o’clock hits and you hear people gathering in the lobby of your residence to go over to Jennings Dining Hall for a late-night snack. Jennings Dining Hall opens every week night from 10pm-midnight with a different food item every night to be enjoyed, and it is a great time to gather with your house and march on over to meal to get a social break from your school work. Personally, the best nights are when they are serving poutine.
  1. Intramural Sports – Mount A offers a wide variety of intramural sports yearly and residences will start teams for every single one of them, so it is super easy to join and represent your residence. It can be competitive but it’s also just for fun, sometimes people try a sport for the first time in intramurals. The list of intramural sports includes soccer, golf, hockey, basketball, volleyball and flag football. One of my fondest memories of residence was when the sprinklers turned on at an intramural soccer game and everybody got soaked.
  1. Endless Social Events – The executive team is constantly trying to make everybody’s experience in residence memorable. There are always events being planned that are open to everyone and there is a nice mix of high-key and low-key events. In my first year in Thornton some high-key events included mixers, ping pong tournaments and karaoke nights to name a few. And low-key events could be a movie night, paint night, board game night and different events like that. My favourite event from first year was the yearly lip sync battle that Thornton House and Bigelow House combine to put on.
  1. Somebody is Always Around – Definitely my favourite part of being in Thornton House was how well everybody got along. Everybody knew each other and the whole house were all friendly. The unspoken policy of Thornton House is to leave your door open whenever you are feeling social and want some company. That being said, there would always be someone with their door open and people roaming the halls looking for a hang out spot. Whenever I would leave my door open, I would have friends to chat with in under 10 minutes, or when I wandered the halls looking for company there would always be somebody with their door wide open. Being as social and chatty as I am this is easily the aspect I miss most about being in residence.
  1. Joining The House Team – I am so passionate about residence life that I could not wait to be the Academic Mentor of Thornton going into my second year. As shown in the picture posted with the blog, we had such a great executive team in Thornton that all got along and worked diligently to provide the best experience for every single person in our residence. In my second year I made so many lifelong friends with the incoming first year students that I never would have met if I wouldn’t have been in Thornton for my second year. Sometimes planning events was even more fun than experiencing the events themselves. My favourite event that we held was an escape room on Halloween that took place in our study lounge. I think almost the whole house came down to experience the escape room and seeing everyone love an event so much was the most gratifying part of being on the residence team.
