The Benefits of Working on Campus
What a better way to enrich your university experience than to get involved with on-campus work life. Getting involved does not only apply to seeking out a club or society or attending various social events on campus; At MtA, one can get involved in several on-campus job opportunities available all year round. At MtA, students of various degree programs can find a job posting which applies to their respective fields: Sciences can apply for numerous TA positions within each department; Commerce students are given the opportunity to start their own business in Sackville; and Arts are involved in publishing books and showcasing their incredible masterpiece at exhibitions and galleries. Here at Mount Allison, there is something for everyone. Take it from someone who moved to Canada from the Middle East with no work experience or knowledge of one’s skillset. Mount A provided a ground for me to build and develop my character, obtain life-long values and experiences, and generate a strong goal-driven mindset. One might wonder, “it is hard enough to find time to complete and submit assignments in time, why must I consider taking on an extra load?”. Apart from earning money, securing a position or two on-campus comes with numerous perks:
Convenience: Working part-time or full-time on-campus saves a student time required to commute back and forth. Being an Aviation student who requires a car to commute to the Moncton Flight College at most three-four time per week, I am glad that all my four jobs are located on campus which helps save the money I would otherwise use on gas. Additionally, working on-campus ensures efficient time and money management.
Flexible: Not all jobs offer this huge perk of working when you can. Employers on campus understands that studies take precedence to work and offers students a chance to work on days and times which work well with their schedule. Majority of on-campus positions which I am currently employed in are not the typical week-long 9-5 jobs which sound dreadful to much of our generation. Writing from my own experience, I am able to balance being an Aviation student while working four jobs on campus over the school year; entering my third-year fall of 2022, I was employed as an Event Service Staff at the campus pub, offering tours to people promoting our beautiful campus, interning at the International Office, and mentoring first-year students. You might ask, “How do you manage your time?”. That’s where working on-campus works well for students, you work when you can being able to get the right amount of hours each week while building your entrepreneurial skills. Additionally, working on-campus can accommodate your classes and other commitments.
Experience: Balancing four or more jobs on-campus sure does equip a student with numerous skills concurrently enabling you to apply values and skills from one job to another. Working 9-5 off-campus does not enable one to explore other options or interests while offering a student with only a few skills and experiences at a time. At MtA, a student will learn efficient ways to manage their time; being able to balance multiple jobs with academics is a perfect example of effective time management. Furthermore, your resume is sure to strengthen highlighting your ability to multitask between work and university life.
Networking: Building those connections is crucial to being able to progress through in the work force. Working on-campus offers amazing and multiple opportunities to widen your network not only with peers but also with faculty, staff, and departments heads. Additionally, networking is useful in gaining new positions for the next school year as well as ensures consistent employment on campus. Communicating with people who share similar interests and values can provide you with useful strategies to prosper and share their own mistakes you can avoid on your path to success.
Why not brighten your resume and get the most out of your university experience at MtA while gaining valuable experiences from the flexibility and networking opportunities. Gain hands on practical and industry experience in areas you wish to pursue further with the benefits of convenience, skill building, and widening your network contacts for your future.
