Hello Incoming Students!! I hope you are all getting excited to join us here at Mount A! We are so excited to meet you and help guide you through this new stage of your life. I know university can seem scary and intimidating, but here are my tips for an easier transition.

  1. Attend Orientation Events

I know there is a lot to do on campus when you first arrive, and all the events can seem overwhelming but trying to attend each event can help a lot with the transition. This gives you the opportunity to tour around campus and Sackville with a wonderful student guide who has been in your shoes. However, it also gives you the opportunity to meet a wide variety of students from different residences and programs. For me, this was my first group of friends on campus.

  1. Take Time for Yourself and for Friends

University is fast paced. It may feel like you are drowning in work by the second week, and that is NORMAL. I felt like I was drowning for a while, but I made sure to take time for myself. Whether that was going for a walk, watching a movie with friends, or even just sitting on my suitemate’s bed, it can do wonders to make you feel more productive. I know we all want to keep working on our schoolwork, however, taking a break to let your mind rest improves your productivity. No one wants to burn out!

  1. Explore Study Spaces on Campus

Take advantage of the study spaces on campus. It took me until the first round of exams in my second year to fully utilize campus. I love studying on the first floor in the library, and if I need to focus, finding a space in the stacks really keeps you working hard. If you like a bit more noise, Gracie’s or the third floor of the Student Centre are the places to be. Leaving your room can be so refreshing!

  1. Find a Sport to Play

Mount A has so much to offer in the athletics department. I would highly recommend trying out for a MtA team! It is an automatic group of friends. They are a ton of low commitment intramural, club and varsity teams that are waiting with open arms. They would love to have you! I was very intimidated joining the varsity swim team but am I extremely glad I did! Some of my closest friends and my roommate are a part of the team! You got this!

Please don’t stress too much! Try to take breaks and do what is best for your mental health. Talk to your professors if you are struggling, they want to help! I can’t wait to meet you! See you in the fall :)
