Sackville: The Paris of South-East New Brunswick

When I think of all the wonderful times I’ve had these past three years while living in Sackville, there are many aspects of this small town that come to mind; the nature, the friendly community members, the recreational activities (tennis, skiing, biking, etc.), the nights out, the farmers market, I could go on. Sackville really does have so much to offer! Though there is probably one activity I’ve spent more time doing these past three years than anything else…going out to eat. As a self-proclaimed food eater, when I arrived in Sackville I was concerned if this small town would have enough variety to keep me satisfied for four years. If you also share this concern, let me put your mind at ease. In my time at MtA I’ve come to learn that the Sackville food scene has a lot more to offer than one might expect. In fact, people often refer to Sackville as the Paris of South-East New Brunswick.
I’ll begin my exposé with my personal favourite déjeuner, pizza. Sackville could also arguably be called the Naples of South-East New Brunswick; you’ll never be more than a 5-minute walk from a world-class slice! The first pizza establishment you’ll encounter on your way into Sackville is the splendid Jack’s Pizza. Home to a wonderful slice and great donairs, Jack’s is the perfect place for lunch or dinner! For late-night grinding at the lib, Snackshop is the ideal place for a slice that’ll empower you to finish your term-paper due at midnight. Next on the Tour de France is Joey’s Pizza and Pasta, a slightly more upscale establishment, this Italian restaurant is ideal for a dine-in pizza meal and hosts a lively Thursday night happy hour. Last but certainly not least, we have the exquisite Goya’s Pizza (Sackville’s very own Gusteau’s if you will). This lovely establishment offers pizza, donairs, as well as Lebanese food. It’s also home to many infamous Sackville snacks, including the Goya’s SuperWorks pizza, honey-garlic garlic fingers, and chicken shawarma (all absolute must-try’s)!
Moving onto something a little more classically Parisian, the numerous cafés in Sackville are a staple of this town and there’s a good chance you’ll find one (or a few) that you’ll frequent regularly! There is a classic debate between which is better, Cranewood or Black Duck, and truthfully you can’t go wrong with either. Both establishments offer a charming ambiance, incredible hot beverages, and delicious treats (gâteau, biscuit, pain, fromage, etc.). Strolling through downtown Sackville you may begin to smell macaroons. Am I really in Paris? No, you are still in Sackville, that essence is coming from the wonderful Aida’s café! Relatively new to the Sackville scene, this café has already become a favourite of many, it offers incredible homemade macaroons, great beverages, and delightful sandwiches. If you’re looking for more French treats during your time in the Paris of South-East New Brunswick, look no further than Knuckles Truffles – home to handmade chocolates, cakes, and other pastries!
Just as in Paris, there are a host of unique restaurants that give life to Sackville’s streets. Song’s Chopsticks is the go-to in Sackville for sushi, and also offers infamous chicken balls (another must try). If you’re looking for more of a diner-style grand repas look no further than Mel’s Tearoom (home to exquisite milkshakes) or Patterson’s (the ideal Sunday brunch). New to Sackville (and conveniently located beside Ducky's) we have Fener’s Place, a Kurdish restaurant with a menu that absolutely cannot miss!
With all these wonderful dining establishments to try (and there are others I didn’t have room to mention) there’s nowhere else in the world you’ll wish to be! Throughout my time at MtA some of my favourite memories have been made in these great places and I’m sure you’ll make some too! Bon Appétit!
