Hey incoming students! As the summer before your university adventure begins, I’m sure a lot of you are eager to start planning how to decorate and stock your residence room to perfection. Your residence room will become your home away from home when you come to Mount Allison, and there are some essentials you definitely won’t want to forget.
First off, it is important to consider what amenities are provided in the room and the residence building. All residence rooms come with basic furniture like a bed, desk, and some storage! Most, if not all, rooms have a minifridge and microwave as well – so you don’t need to worry about bringing any of that.
Next, what kind of room do you have? Room types vary from a private ensuite bathroom, a shared ensuite bathroom, or a shared bathroom with your hall-mates. Rooms can also be a single or a double – meaning you may have a roommate! Once you know this, you can check out the incoming students page on Facebook to try and contact your roommate or suitemate (shared bathroom) and organize what you will bring! It is important to know that if you have your own washroom, you are responsible for things like toilet paper, a shower curtain and bathmat, hand towels, and other bathroom essentials! If you have a shared bathroom among your floor, a shower caddy and bathrobe are great for the back-and-forth.
Now that the background is out of the way, here are the essentials for ANY residence room to make your residence experience the best it can be!
- A fan – especially in September it can be hot in residence
- Slippers – you’ll be walking from your friends rooms in residence and it is so nice to have slippers to walk around in
- Lamp (those rooms can be dark!)
- An easily portable laundry hamper or laundry bag – all laundry rooms are in the residence but require at least walking out of your room to access them
- Shower shoes!
- Thermometer, cold and flu medication, halls, etc – getting sick away from home for the first time can be tough when you don’t have the essentials!
- Surge protected extension cord – a safe extension cord is essential for residence rooms with less plugs than you may need!
- Extra set of sheets – if possible, an extra set of sheets will save you from washing sheets as often, which you will definitely never want to do
- Command strips and hooks – don’t put holes in the walls!
- Anything that will make your room comfortable and feel like home! Decorate with posters, pictures, pillows – whatever makes you feel happy. Your room is your home base!
Good luck with your packing and see you in the fall!
