All the world’s a stage, and at Mount Allison you have many chances to be a player! Whether it’s acting, design, tech, directing, or pretty much any discipline of theatre, there are a myriad of opportunities available to you both curricular, and extracurricular. Many students choose to take Drama 1701 (introduction to drama studies) as an arts distribution elective, however there is no academic requirement to participate in theatre on campus. Housed in the Drama department at the Purdy Crawford Centre for the Arts, the Motyer Fancy theatre produces multiple productions every semester. From comedy to drama to musical theatre, every show is unique and open to students from any program. Emma Yee, a third-year BMus student works as the theatre’s Social Media and Marketing Tech. “If you have a curiosity and passion for it, there is always a space for you to try something out at our theatre.” Yee also recommends students joining Mt. A’s Drama Department newsletter to get the latest on auditions, productions, as well as other drama-related opportunities. Additionally, the Garnet and Gold Musical Theatre Society puts on a yearly production at Convocation Hall. Also open to students from any background, G&G is a welcoming, fun environment that stages musicals adored by students and the greater community. Student-run and operated, the society has put on memorable productions such as Hello Dolly, Mary Poppins, The Addams Family, and (most recently) their impressive production of High School Musical on Stage! Fourth Year BMus student Amanda Godin is G&G’s President. Here’s what she had to say about this year’s production: “This year’s show went great; we are really proud to put musical theatre back on stage in Sackville! I was so proud of the cast and crew; they did an incredible job!” Like the Motyer Fancy Theatre, G&G needs students to take roles in various disciplines, such as acting, playing in the orchestra, tech crew, and many others! Regardless of whether you’re comfortable on or off the stage, there are always opportunities available. So if you, like me, have a passion and drive for theatre, Mount Allison is the perfect place due to the amount of opportunities available, regardless of your degree program!
