CHMA FM & The Argosy

You would expect to do a lot of learning in the classroom at Mount Allison. The university is the reigning #1 undergraduate university in the country with world class professors and programs, so this makes sense. But there are also many opportunities outside the classroom to learn some new skills, try out a new hobby and be involved on campus and in the Sackville community. Two little institutions on the top floor of the Wallace McCain Student Centre gives students the chance to do just that: CHMA FM and The Argosy.

The Argosy is the MtA campus newspaper. It is one of the oldest university newspapers in all of North America. A print edition of The Argosy comes out biweekly, and they also have a website found here. Numerous reporting, columnist and editor positions are available every year for interested students, and anyone can submit material. The Argosy is a great way to get involved in journalism if you are interested in that field or just in writing in general. I always find the crossword puzzles on the back a great way to procrastinate in the library.

Another way to get involved with media on campus is CHMA 106.7 FM, the MtA campus and Sackville community radio station. Ever wanted to host your own radio show? With CHMA you can, as they are always open to new hosts and shows, whether it be music, opinions, or whatever you feel like talking about on the air. With the current COVID-19 situation, they aren’t doing live programming but are broadcasting pre-recorded shows. This is something that caught my attention, and I’ve since started my own music show (Egypt Road Radio, every second Friday at 6pm on chmafm.com!) to pass the time. Radio is a super fun medium, and I would encourage everyone to consider getting involved with either CHMA or The Argosy.
