Academics and Pandemics

Coming to university amid a pandemic can be stressful and brings many new challenges. It is demanding and emotional arriving to a new higher-level school even without the anxiety due to COVID-19. You may be away from family for the first time or for an extended amount of time and it can be scary. Missing family and home can have a huge impact on your ability to do well in school. It often coincides with burnout. When you are not able to go home and are constantly in Sackville you may feel that you haven’t had a break since the semester started. This in turn can lead to feelings of exhaustion, anxiety, and just over classes or assignments. When you feel homesick you could try any of the following to reconnect back to the world and your family:
- Video chat (get a cup of coffee beforehand to feel like you are in a café)
- Online games (there are many board games or video games you can find online)
- Movie night with video chat (for all the commentary)
- Cook a meal or dessert together and see the others' reactions
- Care packages (one of the best things is receiving surprise packages at the bookstore)
- Send letters (try writing it by hand and send it by mail)
When you feel like you are burnt out then there are many things around Sackville you can do to delay or prevent it including:
- Distracting yourself by seeing your Sackville friends even just for a few minutes
- Get dinner at Joeys or other great restaurant
- Go for a walk; walk around town or waterfowl, with a friend or by yourself for some self care
- Grab a quick smoothie from Aida's if you still have homework to do
- Take a trip to Moncton
As a successful student there were many times this semester where I was just done. Done with the assignments and recorded lectures. I was struggling with the amount of work I had and time management. I completed the work to just cross it off my list and be able to go do something else. This did not go very well. Take your time on assignments and do not do it to get it out of the way, make sure you understand what the major concepts are. Make a plan and schedule time for each assignment. When making my schedule I set some goals for the day but did not force strict time limits. Having a set time may make you feel like you need to rush and if you do not meet your deadline then you will feel unaccomplished and not smart enough. If you continue to struggle there are numerous resources to help you:
- Academic mentors (in residences)
- Clubs or societies for the subject that you are having difficulties with (they can give advice and lead you in the right direction to get help
- Professors (office hours are so helpful, they may also direct you to tutors)
- Help centers (they are free and run by students who have taken the course)
- Mount Allison’s tutors
Academics and the pandemic can take its toll on your mental health. If you find yourself in need of help explore the resources at the MtA Wellness Centre. They have free counselling and self care activities throughout the year. It is important to not focus all your energy on getting good grades but to continue to have those moments with family and friends while staying safe.
