A Day in the Life of Monty

Monty is a beloved icon at Mount A.

As the university’s mascot, Monty is responsible for attending important functions across campus throughout the year. Homecoming, sporting events, you name it. Everyone is always excited to see Monty and eager to give him a high-five.

In October 2018, I became one with Monty – literally. For some reason, the normal costume-wearers were unavailable and, as a campus ambassador, I was asked to fill in. I suited up in the Athletic Centre and headed over to Convocation Hall for the closing remarks of the Fall Open House. This was the last event of the day, so it was important to send off prospective students and their families on a happy, positive note.

For starters, I couldn’t see anything from inside the suit. I mean… ANYTHING! Did you know the person inside is looking out of Monty’s beak, not his eyes?!? I thought that was so interesting! One thing’s for sure – I’m very thankful I brought my best friend along to guide me. Since I couldn’t see anything or anyone, she would say “Monty, look! There’s someone who wants to take a photo with you!” Otherwise, I would’ve unintentionally ignored so many people!

It was also extremely hot in the suit. I expected this because it’s a big furry costume, but I could not imagine wearing it on a hot summer day! Nonetheless, I think I drank 10 bottles of water post-Monty… I was pretty dehydrated. And sweaty.

Despite the visual restrictions and the warm temperatures, the hardest part of being Monty was not talking. Guests would ask me questions and I was so tempted to answer, but since “mascots are supposed to be seen not heard,” I could only move my head and make hand gestures.

Dressing up as Monty is an experience I’ll never forget! It was really cool to have the opportunity to represent Mount A in this way and it will always be a university highlight of mine.

I became a true Mountie that day.
